In October, a frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. On November 12th., peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about Father," said the son. "I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor" replied the daughter in law. So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner, this was November 13th. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed their dinners together. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. He was surrounded with loved ones, his SON and family.. and still very much alone and feeling unwanted, unrespected, unloved. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence. He saw tears coming from the Granddad's eyes many times.. some while he was eating, but at other times too.. and felt very sad for his Grandfather. He knew his Granddad was sad, but he just didn't understand "why"... He just knew that his heart hurt when he saw his Granddad crying... But he loved being with his Grandfather, and enjoyed watching him pray... (while his parents were already eating..) But, the sadness, he didn't understand, but shared in it. Yet, his Grandfather never uttered a word of complaint against either of his parents, or anyone else. On December 16th, just before before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making Christmas gifts, little bowls for you and Mama to eat your food in when you get old." The four year old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled. Once again, God's words from the Bible became so true and so fresh in the couples minds... Psalms 8:2 "Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength..." Matthew 21:16 "... Yes. Have you never read, "Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have perfected praise" Matthew 11:25 "... I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes."

sometimes, our actions are so hurtful to others.. even when we don't mean to be hurtful, or even realize that we have.. As my parents used to say.. words and actions should be thought of as a rock.. Once it's said, or an action is done.. "its out there" and many times has caused hurtful feelings, or just deeply hurt someone.. and cannot be taken back.. just like throwing a rock can not immediately return to you without any damage to something... Guess we should all really think before we speak or react, especially in front of children.. they take things so literally and at face value.. and that is how we are really supposed to live. Mark 10:15 "Assuredly, I say to you, who ever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it."
