THE OLD CABIN IN THE WOODS (a true story)

THE OLD CABIN IN THE WOODS
It was just a little cabin with two medium sized rooms, way out in the woods. My Grandma lovingly would say it was "way out in the boonies" . It had an outdoor john which could have been very scary if we would have had to go out at night alone. Thankfully, with a loving Grandma, Aunt, or older cousin... we didn't have to make it alone. The cabin belonged to my grandparents. Great fun in the summer! We usually would go twice while school was out for a week at a time. We worked a lot (but even that, with Grandma was fun). We took long walks, went swimming daily (while Grandma and Granddad fished). Most times my aunt and uncle went too, she was Mom's older and only sister, Jenny. Aunt Jenny was rather awesome, we all thought so. She taught us how to swim, and would usually swim with us. Her husband, our sweet, gentle Uncle Wilson (never had a harsh word to or for anyone).. he always fished with Grandma and Granddad. I think we would average about 4 large fish meals during each week, mostly for supper but now and then even for breakfast. Instead of making biscuits, Grandma always made Ho Cakes.. (she called then) and boy could she and my Mom make delicious bread. Poor Aunt Jenny... not so much and she knew it and would joke about it. But as much as we loved going to the cabin in the summer.
The autumn trips soon began to be our favorites. In the fall, we took long slow walks with Grandma. She absolutely loved the outdoors and would stop real often to share some of her vast knowledge about leaves, trees, vines, and animals. She knew so much about nature, which plants you could eat and which you could not.. which roots you could make tea from and such.. She also could tell you which leaves , plants, bushes, berries and so forth that animals could and would eat.  We traced leaves,
drew pictures, played GO FISH, RUMMY, DOUBLE SOLITARY, AND CONCENTRATION with her cards at night. Also we pressed the beautiful leaves in pages of books, usually between a folded sheet of newspaper. Lots of times on our last trip of the fall we would press leaves to be "checked out" when we returned in the spring.  Oh the wonderful memories I have of that "ole cabin in the boonies". It was a wonderful place to be. As a child and young teen made many, many wonderful memories there with my Grandparents and Aunt and Uncle. They would sit at night with us, (while coloring or playing cards and tell us all kinds of stories of their past, and sometimes scary stories or we thoght they were, but we loved them). Once in a great while our parents would show up for a Saturday and spend the day, but it was spending time with our Grandma and our favorite Aunt and Uncle that sweetens my memories of The Old Cabin In The Woods. .... True story, written by me.. on the first day of autumn September 22, 2012..
